Ten Years of the Monaro Community Access / Day Program
The Cooma Challenge Limited 'Monaro Community Access / Day Program' provides centre-based care to frail older people whose primary carer either has work commitments or is training to join the workforce.
The centre, located in Cooma East, is staffed to accommodate a range of working hours, including evening and weekends as necessary.
Program Coordinator, Ruth Dakin and her staff - who are trained in aged care and in dementia-specific care - pride themselves on providing a comfortable, safe environment with a 'home away from home' atmosphere, including fresh and nutritious meals prepared in accordance with NSW Food Safety Standards.
The program has proved to be extremely popular with both carers and those who receive care.
"The services provided by Cooma Challenge enables me to continue to work four days a week," says one carer, "My wife is cared for from 8:30am to 4:30pm each of those days. Without this service I would have to stop work."
Another carer says, "The staff are extremely supportive. They display genuine love and concern, they are kind and helpful; and they keep me informed too."
One of the people who has attended the centre commented, "The staff thoughtfully considered my needs and made me feel welcome."
This year, 2015, the Monaro Community Access / Day Program commemorates ten years of service in the local community. Cooma Challenge is planning a celebration for the middle of the year.
